Hi, new Kava user here!

I've been wanting to try Kava for the past 3-4 years since I first started looking for alternatives to alcohol (I don't smoke marijuana or use any drugs at all for that matter so that route is a no for me). I just wanted something that would give me a happy bubbly feeling like alcohol does, but without the negative effects, so I eventually found out that Kava exists.

Back in 2022 I first tried some Kava drops that I found on Amazon and I have to say that I was pretty disappointed. I took a few drops sublingually 30 minutes before work one day (the day that I received the order) and when it finally kicked in maybe another 30 minutes later I felt like I was heavily sedated and couldn't function. My mind and body felt so heavy it was like I was walking under water. The feeling last maybe a good hour and a half. I told myself I would never use it again, but I did give it another chance and the results were always hit or miss. I later found out that the drops had a blend of Kavalactones instead of specific ones, and these were mostly the “heavy” type, so I discontinued use of it.

Cut to 4 years later and I finally decided to get around trying the real deal. I had my heart set on trying the Pouni Ono variety because I have read all about the good "heady" feelings that it supposed to give (light bubbly effects and cerebral clarity, social looseness, giddyness, etc), so I went ahead and ordered an 8 oz bag of the micronized Pouni Ono Kava from Kalm With Kava.

Today (4-1-26) I finally received my first batch and I was so anxious to try it!

When I got myself ready to try it, I mixed 1 tblsp of the ground Kava to 1oz of beverage according to the directions (I used a 16 oz bottled water). After drinking half of the bottle I felt INSTANT effects. I was really surprised at how fast it kicked in. However, the entire experience wasn't what I expected.....

12:40pm, First bottle, 1 tblsp of Kava, drunk ½ of the bottle – Upon the first drink I instantly felt something happening. It was like my mind and body slowed down to the point of “lagging behind” and I felt non-functional. This feeling continued but I kept watching it to see how it would go.....

12:52pm, drunk the other ½ of the bottle – I found myself getting a bit disappointed because of the “heavy” feelings I was experiencing instead of the “headiness” I was hearing so much about.

1:10pm - I waited a little bit to see what would become of the feeling and I found myself just feeling more “heavy”, and not in a good way. At this point I started feeling like my blood pressure was rising a bit and it was causing a bit of anxiety of not knowing what to expect, but it eventually subsided (though the rising blood pressure feeling did come and go later with each subsequent drink).

1:20pm, Second bottle, 1 tblsp of Kava, drunk ½ of the bottle – At this point I was definitely buzzed for sure, but I started to feel even more “heavy” in my body. I just didn't like the feeling at all.

1:30pm, drunk the other ½ of the bottle – It started to feel like maybe some of the “headiness” FINALLY wanted to kick in....... but it never quite did.

2:00pm, Third bottle, 1 tblsp of Kava, drunk ½ bottle – Finally started to feel the inside of my mouth becoming dry and slightly “numb”. At this point I did finally start to experience some mild euphoria and relaxed like in an “everything is gonna be alright” sorta way, but none of the chattiness, uplifting mood or giddiness that others reported.

2:30pm, drunk other ½ of the bottle – The euphoria became more potent but never overly so. Found that I couldn't walk straight at times and I was at the point of not being able to be functional, but still no uplifting mood associated with the “buzz” I was feeling.

3:30pm - After this point the feeling lasted maybe a good hour later with no changes,

4:00pm – The feeling started to level off to the point that I was finally more functional, even having went out shopping, but still no uplifting mood or anything like that.

Overall, I am a bit disappointed in my first experience with Pouni Ono Kava because it was not what I was expecting. It did give me that “buzz” that alcohol will give, but it felt “heavy” and I experienced none of the “bubbly” cerebral effects that there was so much hype about associated with this strain. However, I did read something about Kava regarding “reverse tolerance”, so some people may have to drink it a few times over time in order to let it build up in your system to truly get the full effects from it, so I will give it the benefit of the doubt and see how my next experiences go. I am willing to keep trying with it.

UPDATE: It is currently 4 hours later at the time of this writing and I actually do have a buzz, but it feels residual like how you would feel a few hours after drinking alcohol, but the mild euphoric feeling has long worn off and as I already stated, there was never any of the uplifting mood or giddiness to begin with. I do feel perfectly functional with this buzz, so that is a plus though.

I'm thinking maybe if I would've went further up to 5 shells (again, in this session I used 16oz bottled water and went up to 3 bottles, drinking ½ of the bottles in each go) I probably would've reached that feeling everyone else hyped up but I felt that I would've been completely non-functional by that point, so it's a good thing I stopped when I did.

I will see how this goes in my next Kava session and try to update when possible.

Hi welcome to kava forums thank you for leaving a detailed review. The Pouni Ono we used to talk about fondly, has not been around for at least 7 years. It used to be very heady like we described back then. there are single cultivars like Kelai, that have zero heaviness, perhaps give that a try next, the the kava Society of New Zealand as a wonderful Kelai, there are others that offer the same cultivar, and depending where you live, one can be faster over the other. but the one I mentioned is one of the best.

Hi Groggy! Thanks for the response! You mentioned that the Pouni Ono that you remembered fondly is not around anymore. I wonder if there were any modifications made to the strain over time? I'm not too keen on that so I am not certain. The one that I got is from Kalm With Kava, and from what I hear they are a pretty respected company. I dunno.

I've also heard about Kelai and wanted to give that a try too. I think it may be a bit more rare than Pouni Ono but I saw some recent websites that seem to carry it, so I am going to check it out!

By the way, I am giving the Pouni Ono another shot today and will post updates later after the day is over.

Absolutely, KWK is wonderful as well. It is not so much that it was modified but varying generations of the plant will produce different results. Last I tried it it leaned more balanced. From Kalm with Kava, you could try Loa waka. Alternatively you could try one from the list below, both these vendors are excellent, above average sellers.

How is the Talanoa Mada from Fiji? It's name alone is calling me lol

Ok, so here is my update for the next day. Once again, I'm using micronized Pouni Ono Kava and 16oz bottled water for my beverage:

1:00pm, First bottle, 1 tblsp Kava, drunk ½ of bottle – Immediately felt some effect, but unlike yesterday I didn't feel “heavy” this time. I just felt a mild buzz kick in.

1:15pm, drunk other ½ of bottle – The buzz kicked in more with still no “heaviness”, but really no “headiness” either. However, I noticed when I stood up I felt a tad bit unsteady, so something was kicking in. Also noticed some mild stomach discomfort.

1:34pm, Second bottle, 1 tblsp, drunk ½ of bottle – Even more buzz. However, still no “headiness” and I feel perfectly functional. Slightly buzzed but not “drunk”.

2:10pm – Started noticing some “waviness” as I was walking around the house and it remained when I sat back down, but still no “headiness”, euphoria or uplifting mood. The “buzz” was there, but I'm so functional that the buzz is not really prominent – which is a good thing.

2:16pm, drunk other ½ of bottle – Soon as I drunk the other ½ of the second bottle my body told me to stop right there – at least for the time being. I'll wait a bit before I start on my third bottle.

2:38, Third bottle, 1 tblsp Kava, drunk ½ of bottle – Started feeling more “waviness” and told myself, “Yea, I definitely better stop”. However, although I do got an apparent “buzz”, there is no euphoria, removal of social inhibition or uplifting mood associated with it, and I still do feel functional. Also noticed the slight onset of a slight headache on the left side of my head but only momentarily.

The remainder of the day from 3:20pm til 8pm I was drinking more Kava, doing at least 3 ½ more bottles of water worth of it and I got absolutely NOTHING. The only thing that hit me was just a little more waviness, which didn't progress more.

It's only my 2nd day on this trial with Pouni Ono Kava but I have to say that so far I am very disappointed. I will continue to try it over the next few days until the bag is done, but at this point I do not expect much more from it - which is a shame because after all of the hype about it I was really hoping to have the same experience.

Next time try medium grind, it is cheaper and the same thing, get a 75 micron strainer on Amazon. Super easy to prep. Keep looking, there is a kava for everyone! :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I will keep trying!

As a mini update I just tried some more of the Kava I have. This time instead of 1 tblsp I used 2. For reference, this time I actually used a standard styrofoam cup and filled it up 90% of the way with water. Got hit pretty hard! Still no uplifting mood but I got more of that spaced out feel in the head that alcohol usually gives after the first few drinks.

So maybe the amount of tblsp you add makes the difference. I only started with one tblsp per 1 cup since that was on the instructions, but I guess that's just starter instructions for safety. I can definitely see how drinking more than 1 tblsp could result in trouble if one is not careful.

2 tblsp per 1 cup is definitely a lot stronger. It has been 30 mins since I drunk it, not even the full cup but down to about half, and the effect is STRONG. But still no uplifting, giddiness or anything yet. I wanna drag it out a bit first to test the effects.

I will see how this goes throughout the day.

Yes, you need more than that. I use 1/3 cup per liter of water, many use more with more or less water, but that works for me. I get two washes from each 1/3, I use less water on the second, maybe 500ml (depends on the kava). My usual now adays is Fiji Vanua Vanuatu, and I get 2 washes easily with that.

So this is what happened the remainder of the day yesterday.

Once again, for reference I used a 6 oz styrofoam cup, filled it 90% of the way with water each time, and mixed in 2 tblsp of kava instead of 1 tblsp like I did the first two days. Earlier yesterday before I posted my mini update I had 1 1/2 cups. But I ended up drinking 3 more cups later.

With each cup I had it gave me a strong buzz and waviness, but noticed the buzz didn't last long, nor was there any mood uplifting or euphoria associated with it.

I found myself getting disappointed but didn't want to drink too much and I tried to keep the time kinda spaced out between each cup. By 6pm I was on my third cup.

Not expecting much, about 30 minutes to an hour later I was walking and found that I was very unsteady, then the area between my eyes were straining and I couldn't focus straight. About 5 minutes later I was hit with mild nausea that worsened with each movement. I thought for sure I was gonna toss my insides out.

I sat down and drunk a ginger ale, hoping that it would all subside. It took about an hour but the nausea finally did subside, however, I noticed that whenever I stood up and tried to walk the waviness and unsteadiness was still with me, so I sat back down. That didn't subside til maybe another hour later, with it gradually fading away as the night went on.

And yet, with all of that, STILL no euphoric effects.

Hi,, I'm back with a little update.

So this past Friday I received my second bag of Micronized Pouni Ono from Kalm With Kava. It was a weekly subscription order.

Since Friday until Sunday I've been taking the Kava, using between 2 to 4 tblsp per cup.

I have to say that the most I've got as far as effect was just a mild spaced out feeling and unsteadiness and mild dizziness (none of which lasted no more than a few minutes to half-hour at most) but no uplifting or euphoric effects whatsoever. I can only describe it as an "empty buzz". I've come to the conclusion that's the most I'll probably get out of this Kava and shouldn't' expect anything more.

I don't want to give up on Kava. but I do have to say that I am pretty disappointed. I guess the reason is I was basing it on all of the hype I kept hearing about. I just didn't get any of that AT ALL.

This morning I went ahead and cancelled my weekly subscription because I just can't see paying money for nothing.

Before I call it quits tough, I think I may try to give the Kelai strain a try and perhaps maybe try the Pouni Ono once again in the original form to see if there is a difference vs the micronized version.

It's hard to beat trad prep kava. Glad you're going to try it this way. When you experience your initial, full kavafication, you'll be very glad you persisted.
